Background of the Study
Efik language forums in Calabar serve as vibrant platforms where speakers engage in intercultural discourse, reflecting the region’s diverse sociolinguistic landscape. In these forums, participants employ various discourse strategies to negotiate meaning, bridge cultural differences, and foster mutual understanding (Inyang, 2023). The intercultural nature of these interactions is evident in the blending of linguistic elements from different languages and cultural references that cater to a heterogeneous audience. Research indicates that such forums not only facilitate the exchange of ideas but also contribute to the evolution of language practices by incorporating elements of modern communication while retaining traditional linguistic features (Ekpo, 2024). This study appraises the intercultural discourse strategies used in Efik language forums by analyzing how speakers adapt their language to diverse cultural contexts and mediate intercultural communication. The research highlights the importance of these strategies in promoting inclusivity and social cohesion in a multicultural urban setting (Inyang, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the dynamic intercultural interactions on Efik language forums in Calabar, there is limited empirical research on the specific discourse strategies employed in these settings. Current studies tend to overlook the nuances of intercultural communication and the mechanisms by which speakers negotiate cultural differences (Ekpo, 2024). This gap in knowledge hinders the development of comprehensive models of intercultural discourse that could inform effective communication practices. The study seeks to address these shortcomings by examining the linguistic adaptations and strategies used in Efik forums, thereby elucidating how intercultural discourse is structured and maintained.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the key intercultural discourse strategies in Efik forums.

  2. To analyze the linguistic adaptations used in intercultural communication.

  3. To assess the impact of these strategies on social cohesion.

Research Questions

  1. What discourse strategies are prevalent in Efik language forums?

  2. How do speakers adapt their language to accommodate cultural diversity?

  3. What effects do these strategies have on fostering intercultural understanding?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of intercultural discourse strategies in Efik language forums, contributing to our understanding of multicultural communication in urban Nigeria. The findings will benefit linguists, communication scholars, and policymakers by offering insights into effective intercultural dialogue practices (Inyang, 2023; Ekpo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the appraisal of intercultural discourse strategies in Efik language forums in Calabar and does not include other digital or offline communication platforms.
